Welcome Message

Universities typically see their missions as three-sided.

We teach. We do research. We serve the public.

At NC State, we believe we have responsibilities to do “outreach and engagement” to the people and places that surround us.

  • We should look for ways to teach and learn not just in our classrooms, but beyond.
  • We should find ways to share and apply our research not just with other academics, but in communities and organizations and businesses.
  • We should provide service not just to each other, but directly to the public.

That commitment has been baked into our DNA, from our founding document calling for us to provide “liberal and practical” education to our current commitment to “think and do.” The university’s current strategic plan calls for us to “enhance local and global engagement through focused strategic partnerships.”

To that end we respectfully work with our community partners, believing that collaboration and partnership strengthen our teaching, research, and public service and helps us fulfill our land-grant mission to make our knowledge more accessible to others.

As you will see from our “news” section, our outreach and engagement take many forms, from non-credit courses and extension programs, from community service projects to board service, from hands-on field research to major forums and seminars. Through all these efforts, we bring the knowledge, insight, and energy of NC State to bear on the needs of our community, resulting in a higher quality of life and a stronger economy.

Our success is only possible through a committed team of faculty, staff and students across the university who devote their time, talents and resources to the task. For that team, the Office of Outreach and Engagement serves as a bridge, providing encouragement and support to the NC State community seeking to engage and communities interested in partnering with us. Let us know how we can help!
